The cleaning action should not be considered as a chore, but as a privileged moment when one learns to observe one’s weapon. One tracks down the grime, but also takes the opportunity to check that everything is in order, a subject that will be discussed in the next chapter “Inspection”. Finally, at the end of this inspection, the weapon is lubricated. Thus, cleaning, inspection and lubrication constitute an inseparable trio, necessary to keep weapons in firing condition. Obviously, their realization is done in the chronology stated: cleaning, inspection and lubrication. If the chronological order “cleaning then inspection” is to be respected, in practice things are done almost concomitantly. Of course, there can be no question of inspecting a dirty part: the presence of dirt distorts the findings that can be established.
In this chapter we will discuss the use of chemicals and workshop equipment. It is therefore necessary to remember that this requires health considerations depending on the case: working in a ventilated place, wearing adequate gloves, protecting the eyes and ears in case of projection or noise production. For the eyes and ears, we are thinking particularly of the use of air compressors. All this is set out in more detail in Chapter 2.
